Lets Talk Design 015

Frederic Vanhorenbeke was one of the Creative Network speakers at the latest Lets Talk Design conference held in Gent in august 2015. Among sharing its life experience as a designer, he also introduced to the audience some of his key learning as a designers life like daring to dream, trying everything and brand loving. A good audience of designers, a very well organised evening by Timothy Helmer makes these events an essential moment for our community of thinkers to share knowledge. 

Evolution brand design by Coast

“Evolution”  is French kitchen tools brand based in Normandy and created by Vincent Le Guern. The brand offers a first collection of height innovative, fresh and reassuring products based on the rich French and European culinary tradition. Through sensual and graphic shapes, “Evolution” proposes products with innovative functionalities that follow the evolution in our rhythm and way of life and that have been designed to last in time.

Designed by Alain Gilles and branded by Coast, the collection will be launched in 2015.

Blanc Kara in Night Fever 4

The successful Night Fever series delivers another inspiring volume, which takes a grand global tour of the best in hospitality design. Over 130 interiors are revealed that have been realised within the last 3 years by young studios and world-renowned design firms, including Estudio Campana, Ippolito Fleitz Group, Marcel Wanders studio, Ministry of Design and DFC.

Our work for Miami's Blanc Kara is featured : From architecture to decoration and design, every aspect of the experience is revealed. Architecture & Design by our DFC team.

Coast published in Victionary last release

Our Re:think work of the Euro banknote featured in Making A Splash, the last release of Victionary.

Fluid forms are analogues of change and endless possibilities. Manifesting a capricious state that take on a life of its own once leaving our hands, mediums as varied as ink, watercolour, paint, acrylic, and digital paintbrush fuel artists and designers with inspirations, building a unique spectrum of work that break loose from sheer control into fun directed chaos during the creative process.

Collating some 150 trendsetting works spanning brand identities, print & packaging, typography, visual arts and artefacts, Making A Splash: Graphics that Flow is an exciting review that uncovers how the multifarious visual wonderment of liquid mediums triumph in marketable design. Divided into five sections, the title zooms in on various platforms, techniques and digital advancement that celebrate the charm of flowing visuals.

Susan's Boyle

This is the beer label we have created for the 100/100 project initiated by SB Studio. 100/100 is a live collaborative experiment between the public and a carefully selected group of 100 artists, illustrators, designers and writers. . 

Crafted by The Liverpool Craft Beer Co. the project is about 100 bottles, 100 names, 100 collaborators, 100 unique identities. Exhibited online and at the launch in March, all 100 bottles will be available to purchase through a unique online auction and featured in a book that will be available for sale at the event. All profits going to Art Fund. The National Fundraising Charity for Art www.artfund.org

Coast Brand Impact 2014 winner

Celebrating the world’s very best design for branding and campaigns, the awards were judged in the context of the market sector for which they were created. The judges – co-chaired by independent design writer and consultant Lynda Relph-Knight and Computer Arts Editor Nick Carson – reviewed each sector across two streams – Branding Programmes andBranded Campaigns.

Powered by Future’s market-leading creative and design brands – Computer Arts and Creative Bloq – the Brand Impact Awards were hosted by award-winning comedian and XFM DJ Josh Widdicombe, at the London Film Museum on march 6th 2014.

We are one of the two big winners of the evening as we scooped Best of Show – Branding Programmes for our identity work for Smets Department store and Best retail branding for the same project 

As the judges say about our identity work : "A piece of branding that stands miles above the rest of its market sector. Lots of departments store have great logos or eye catching campaigns. They may have stylish interiors, but this project brings everything together in a beautifully drawned up identity solution. Stylish but most importantly concistent accross a dizzying variety of applications"

Coast @ Central Saint Martins

Coast was invited with Julia Woollams & Kath Tudball (from agency Johnson Banks), Studiothomson, Petra Böner and Daniel Eatock at Central Saint Martins on a conference on Self Initiated Projects. Aiming at students at Foundation Level, Coast talk was all about curiosity and the hability for designer to always evolve. Many thanks to Jo Simpson and Timothy Meara of Central Saint Martins for their warm welcome. After the conference, we had the privilege to be guided by our guests in the amazing new CSM headquarters.

The radical character of the process translates into the panoramic format which longs to capture everything, and carry the energy of the flux from one side to the other accross the territory of the image. 2013 has been a good year for Coast as we have been working on a great selection of projects that will be launched in 2014. Among them is the strategic repositioning of a belgian broadcasting institution, the branding of a new actor in the kitchen tools market and the development of a premium hospitality experience for a top european financial institution.

Icon Magazine x Coast

Shazia Chaudhry, art director of International design magazine ICON asked Coast to take part in their popular 1 page feature called Rethink where they ask graphic designers to redesign something they think needs updating, has been designed badly or has a problem that needs solving. Agencies involved so far have included Bibliotheque who redesigned the UK passport, Build who redesigned the cigarette packet, Proud who rebranded the seaside town of Rhyl and KK Outlet who rebranded the Scouts. At Coast, we choose to redesign something we use everyday : The Euro banknotes. We believe there is a better solution than the current design : a signal for change, creativity and forward thinking. Glory Glory charity poster

Coast was asked to participate to Glory Glory, a non profit poster exhibition and book of graphic poster art based on the theme of football chants. Contributors including Music, SEA, NB Studio, The Designers Republic and Wim Crowel were asked to create a A1 poster on a team of their choice. We choose to promote our fantastic Belgium football team with one of our well know local star "Le Grand Jojo". The chant, called "Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole, We are the champions" was created in 1985 for RSCA Anderlecht as "Allez, Allez, Allez, Allez, We are the champions" but it is in 1986 that the mexican version accompagned the red devils to the semi finals of the world cup! 

Two posters versions were created : one for Anderlecht (purple, the color of the team), and one for the belgium team (red for the red devils).

The show was held in London this August at Hoxton Arches. All submissions are available for sale at the event, with all proceeds going towards British Blind Sport, a charity enabling the visually impaired to enjoy playing sport.

Welcome to our think tank

For many years, we have been working on a huge amount of different clients types. Ranging from small companies wishing to bring their products and ideas to a level of brand to large scale companies with communication system problems, we have grow with them. Their business models (and sometimes no business model) have teach us a lot on what a market is and what it needs. By combining experience and secret learnings from their stories, we have also build a knowledge in creating a brand - from scratch in a garage to a international ambition. Now comes the time to share these experiences with those new challenges, the new entrepreneurs, the people willing to make a change. This is why we have set up our think tank approach, available for all businesses willing to have a support in building roots for a better brand.

Our Think tank approach is simple : around a table, we bring guests to think and act creatively. The subject is your brand : where it comes from, where it can go, how to find new ways of being a brand. Its more than just a vision on what your brand could look like, its also a vision of how your brand could act, progress, deliver and be more efficient. Our think tank members vary : they are chosen accordingly to the purpose of the issue, the targeted market, their own story. 

The process of delivering ideas based on specialists analysis is a keystone to our Think tank approach. Our office is now open to new discussions, let the conversation begin.

Chelsea College of Arts Lecture

Frederic Vanhorenbeke, head of design at Coast, was invited by The Chelsea College of Arts for a lecture on his story on graphic design. From starting your "home" company basically in your bedroom to becoming a multi-disciplinary design agency, the lecture was about daring to take risks and taking opportunities. We thank Chris Harrison for the warm welcome.
